Most in-vehicle data rates up to 6GHz can be handled by FAKRA connectors based on the SMB connector interface. FAKRA stands for Facharbeitskreis Automobil, a German organization made up of industry experts from vehicle manufacturers and equipment suppliers. FAKRA connectors are mechanically keyed/coded for quick assembly with 14 coding options. They feature primary and secondary locks to prevent accidental separation, and color-coded to differentiate apps.
Newer vehicle data rates involve 9.6GHz transmission, and future applications will require higher frequencies. The next generation of FAKRA-Mini coaxial connectors is meeting this need. Initial efforts to secure multiple sourcing were secured when Molex and Rosenberger announced a dual-source agreement to produce Rosenberger's HFM high-speed FAKRA-Mini automotive connector system, which operates at frequencies up to 15GHz and supports high-speed data transfer rates at high up to 20Gb/s. In addition to providing higher frequency capability, the FAKRA-Mini connector also features a smaller modular construction that saves more than 80% space compared to traditional FAKRA connectors.
5G wireless networks in crowded cities will require thousands of tiny transmitter/receiver boxes in close proximity to each other. Most installations will require two or more optical junction boxes. Cable I/O connectors include low PIM versions of Type N connectors and larger 7/16 DIN and 4.3/10 series connectors. Newer connectors will continue to come to market as miniaturization and higher frequencies are required.
Commercial transporters are already utilizing additional on-site data recording capabilities such as GPS location tracking systems and transmitting this data back to their offices, these systems often require reliable environmental sealing to protect cameras, sensors, antennas, connectors and other components from Subject to moisture, dust, and other environmental hazards. While traditional sealed connectors such as SMA can be used, Molex and JAE offer FAKRA connectors that are sealed to IPX9K equivalent when mated, while TE Connectivity's DEUTSCH product line and Aptiv (formerly Delphi) for antenna and other exterior vehicle applications A variety of vehicle connectors are available with different levels of environmental sealing. The trend in the transportation market towards higher frequencies and shorter wavelengths will also lead to smaller vehicle antennas that can be terminated with miniature coaxial connectors such as:
MHF-TI from I-PEX or U.FL from Hirose. series. Antenna transmission involves tracking through beamforming, steering, and tracking to handle 5G New Radio (NR) transceivers and front-end RF components. In addition to being placed in the roof fins, some antennas can also be attached directly to the vehicle glass and via cables to the internal processor.
