FAKRA and FAKRA-Mini connectors provide GHz transmission

Most in-vehicle data rates up to 6GHz can be handled by FAKRA connectors based on the SMB connector interface. FAKRA stands for Facharbeitskreis Automobil, a German organization made up of industry experts from vehicle manufacturers and equipment suppliers. FAKRA connectors are mechanically keyed/coded for quick assembly with 14 coding options. They feature primary and secondary locks to prevent accidental separation, and color-coded to differentiate apps.

 

 

Newer vehicle data rates involve 9.6GHz transmission, and future applications will require higher frequencies. The next generation of FAKRA-Mini coaxial connectors is meeting this need. Initial efforts to secure multiple sourcing were secured when Molex and Rosenberger announced a dual-source agreement to produce Rosenberger's HFM high-speed FAKRA-Mini automotive connector system, which operates at frequencies up to 15GHz and supports high-speed data transfer rates at high up to 20Gb/s. In addition to providing higher frequency capability, the FAKRA-Mini connector also features a smaller modular construction that saves more than 80% space compared to traditional FAKRA connectors.

MHF-TI from I-PEX or U.FL from Hirose. series. Antenna transmission involves tracking through beamforming, steering, and tracking to handle 5G New Radio (NR) transceivers and front-end RF components. In addition to being placed in the roof fins, some antennas can also be attached directly to the vehicle glass and via cables to the internal processor.
