What is the difference between RF and coax?

RF and coax refer to two different types of cables used to transmit radio frequency signals

RF and coax refer to two different types of cables used to transmit radio frequency signals:

RF cable stands for radio frequency cable. It is a generic term for any cable designed to carry high frequency electronic signals in the radio frequency range. RF cables come in different styles like coaxial cable, twin lead, etc. but they all serve the purpose of transmitting RF signals.

• Coaxial cable is a specific type of RF cable that consists of an inner conductor surrounded by a tubular insulator, surrounded by a circular conducting shield. Coaxial cable is most commonly used to transmit RF signals. It has some key advantages over other RF cable types:

› It can carry both RF signals and direct current (DC) power. This is useful for applications like cable TV and network cables.

› It has low signal loss, so it can transmit signals over longer distances.

› It is resistant to electrical interference from external noise. The shield provides good isolation.

› It supports a wide range of frequencies, from low MHz up to tens of GHz. So, it is suitable for many wireless technologies.

› It is a very flexible and durable cable.

So in summary, RF cable is a generic term, and coaxial cable is a specific and most popular type of RF cable designed for efficiently carrying radio frequency signals with low loss and interference. Coaxial cable is ideal for applications like connecting antennas, cable TV distribution, and network equipment.
